A teenager who attacked his neighbour avoided jail on Wednesday due to his age.

Cody Ewing, 18, punched Daniel Murphy at Glasgow Central train station on October 21 2022.

The incident was Ewing's third conviction for assault.

The city’s Sheriff Court heard that an argument took place between them at the ticket barriers.

Prosecutor Nicholas Konopate said: “Ewing grabbed Mr Murphy’s neck and punched him to the face causing a cut to his lower left eye which was bruised and swollen.”

He also suffered cuts to his neck.

Other witnesses intervened to stop the attack.

Ewing, of Cumnock, was later arrested and charged before replying: “That’s a joke.”

Ewing pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Murphy to his injury.

His lawyer told the court: “They live in the same street in Patna.

“There is a history between the two families not involving Mr Ewing but the victim does with his brothers.

“They met by accident at the station and Mr Ewing said that the victim made some faces towards him.

“He then lost his temper and behaved in the way narrated.”

Sheriff Kevin McCarron ordered Ewing to pay Mr Murphy £500 compensation.

He said: “It is only your age that is taking you away from custody.

“This is your third assault conviction - it is how you deal with it.”
