A zebra crossing in Paisley’s Park Road is set to be upgraded to a light-controlled crossing after safety concerns were raised in the community.

Works are expected to begin at the site at the end of this month, with the decision welcomed by a campaigning politician.

Councillor Ben Smith, a Labour representative for Paisley Northwest, said the change was “great news” for local people.

It comes after residents organised a petition on the issue, which called for something to be done about the problem spot.

Councillor Smith said: “This is great news for the local residents who have been calling on action to be taken to make Park Road safer for years.

“Alongside the new light-controlled crossing, the speed limit on the road could be reduced to 20mph to reduce the number of road accidents caused by cars losing control on the hill.

“Recently residents organised a petition and I was pleased to be able to support the residents’ campaign for action to be taken.

“The council have made the right decision and I look forward to seeing the lights being installed and hopefully the speed limit reduced.”

A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said: “Works to upgrade the zebra crossing to traffic lights are due to begin at the end of this month.

“We are currently carrying out an exercise to look at 30mph roads across Renfrewshire and whether they would be suitable to reduce to 20mph.

“However, the process is at a very early stage and any proposed changes will need to go through a traffic regulation order process and public consultation before being introduced.”
