The Glasgow Times is on the hunt for the best takeaway lunch spot in the city. We are looking for your recommendations across the city centre, North Glasgow, East End, Southside and West End, and will be judging food based on Value for Money, Taste, Atmosphere, Service and Variety.
A few days ago a sign caught my eye in the city centre.
Saint Judes, on Bath Street, is a venue known for its sweet cocktails and underground nightclub. But, as it turns out, they also serve lunch.
Their offer reads "Express lunch on weekdays between 12pm and 3pm, from £5.50.
So, today, I decided to give it a try.
When I entered the building, the first thing that struck me was that it was empty.
Other than myself, there was one family of three there, enjoying their food.
This did not discourage me, especially because the server was lovely and very helpful.
I glanced at their menu, which offers a burger, including a vegan version, sandwich and soup, a Caesar salad wrap, macaroni and cheese or scampi and chips.
All are priced between £5.50 and £7.50.
It was a difficult choice between the pasta (always my first choice) or the Caesar wrap, but I felt like trying something new today.
The waitress quickly took my order and I also got some water. I had to, in this heat.
Around 20 minutes later, I received my order to go, in a handy brown bag and I trotted back to the office.
I sat outside to enjoy my lunch and I was convinced after the first bite.
The wrap was seasoned perfectly and came with a generous portion of chips, also it was very clearly made fresh.
Inside, the lettuce gave an extra crunch to the meal, however, the sauce was a little too runny for my liking.
I failed to finish the meal, but I just know it will make the perfect leftover dinner.
What's the verdict?
Value for Money: 4/5 – For £7.50, I basically got two meals out of this, as it was impossible to finish it for lunch. But even if you eat it all, I guarantee you will be full.
Taste: 3/5 – It was, as I said above, very tasty. One point is reduced because it didn't blow me away. It was what I expected.
Atmosphere: 3/5 – Difficult to quantify. It was empty, so I was taken aback but there was good music playing and the staff made me feel comfortable.
Service: 5/5 – Cannot praise the lady behind the bar enough, especially as she was on shift alone. Perfect!
Variety: 2/5 – If you eat anything, you have five choices, if you have any dietary requirements, the selection is much more limited. It's understandable for a bar, but I still have to mark it fairly.
Overall score: 17/25
