White rabbit on loose in Pollok Country Park in Glasgow

The Glasgow Times has received reports of a 'white rabbit with brown spots' setting up camp near the Sir John Stirling Maxwell Allotment Gardens in Pollok Country Park in the Southside of the city.

The sightings have come after news from SSPCA that rabbits have been dumped on the premises not too long ago. 

Now Glasgow City Council have placed signs near the area reading: "Please do not enter this area or attempt to catch these rabbits.

"The more people who approach them the more difficult they become to catch." 

Our reporter on the scene did not spot the rabbit themselves, but others in the area have claimed to catch a glimpse of the bunny.

A regular dog walker said: "The dogs saw the rabbits before I did the first time to be honest.

"They gave chase, and stopped pretty quickly after I shouted at them, but the rabbits were long gone.

"One was white for sure though which confused me as I thought I'd not ever seen a wild white rabbit before.

"Then when I was walking by again on Tuesday evening I spotted the rabbits first and got the dogs on the lead. There were two of them there, one white with brown spots I guess and the other like a normal brown rabbit.

"I wondered what was going on and then saw the council sign warning people not to try to catch them as each failed attempt makes it harder to grab them.

"I thought that was pretty funny, to be honest. Who's out here trying to catch rabbits? The council I suppose.

"I don't know if they're someone's escaped pets or what but they look quite comfortable where they are. Good luck to whoever's trying to wrangle them."

However, others are not feeling hop-timistic about the animal. 

A local resident said: "I've not seen the rabbit, no. 

"I've lived here for five years and never came across the white one. 

"Maybe someday."

A spokesman for the council said: "A white rabbit was unfortunately abandoned in the park by its owner and then managed to escape.

“The rabbit is domesticated and is likely to be distressed and disorientated while trying to survive in a park populated by wild animals, including predators such as foxes.

“We have been trying to catch the rabbit with the SSPCA. Anyone who spots the rabbit should contact the SSPCA or our countryside rangers."

People are reminded to not approach the area or to try and catch the rabbit.
