A new graduate from the University of Strathclyde is thought to be the first ever to have had the same teacher in primary school.
Charlene McKechnie received her BA (Hons) in Primary Education after completing her degree with a course leader who was also her primary school teacher over 20 years ago.
Senior Teaching Fellow Robert Collins previously taught Charlene in P6 at St Brendan's Primary in Yoker.
Charlene vividly remembers winning a science, technology and engineering competition with Mr Collins in June 1999.
After she was presented with her degree in a ceremony at Strathclyde's Barony Hall, Charlene was given a framed news story about the 1999 competition.
It is believed to be the first time a student on the course has had the same teacher at school and at university.
In a touching message to Mr Collins, Charlene said: “I was completely overwhelmed with your kind words and will be forever thankful for your belief in me and helping me make it to the end.
“I can’t thank the University enough for continually believing in me…(I) was always 100% committed to finishing the journey I started almost six years ago.”
Mr Collins said: “Charlene is one of many students to have been welcomed into teacher education via the widening access route and throughout her studies, she has maintained exceptional commitment and optimism.
“She was presented with the framed in recognition of her resilient character and professionalism.”
