A group of youngsters were treated to a day of tree planting to help their community 'go green'.

Children from Just Be Kids nursery in Nitshill teamed up with local community groups and staff from Wheatley Homes to plant trees near Cleeves Road.

Around 20 nursery tots were joined by Wheatley Group chief executive Steven Henderson and environmental charity Urban Roots for the session.

The new trees are a delightful addition to the area and will help to absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the air.

Mr Henderson said: “Wheatley’s commitment to sustainability is already making homes and lives better.  

“This environmental week of action is about shining a light on environmental services and the role they play in our green agenda while also getting people in our communities involved.

“It was great to have kids from Just Be Kids nursery and members of the local community join us to plant trees.

“A key part of our week of action is improving Wheatley communities as well as leaving a positive lasting effect on the wider community.”

Lorraine Kirkwood, head of service at Just Be Kids nursery, added: “Currently we have a big eco focus and are working towards our green flag.

“Being able to take part in wider community events like this litter pick and tree planting with Wheatley Group is important and will allow us to submit our application and get the eco flag flying high above the nursery.

“These types of events allow the children going into primary one to have that focus on caring for our community, keeping it nice and clean and being proud of where we live.”

Community projects to support tree planting is part of Wheatley Group’s larger £100m Greener Homes, Greener Lives campaign. More than 2000 trees have already been planted in Wheatley communities so far.

Staff from Wheatley Group supported a range of similar events across Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dumfries and Galloway as part of an environmental week of action.
