EMERGENCY services have rushed to rescue two women from the Clyde after their car ended up in the water during an incident this afternoon. 

The flooded vehicle was left stricken in the river near Newark Castle after the car plunged into the water at around 2.05pm today.  

Police, paramedics and three fire engines hurried to the scene alongside the coastguard, who deployed teams from Greenock and Helensburgh as well as an inshore lifeboat. 

The two occupants of the vehicle were able to free themselves from the vehicle before emergency services arrived and were then taken away in an ambulance.

An eyewitness told our sister title the Greenock Telegraph: "There were two women in the car.

"They [emergency services] wrapped them up in blankets and then took them off in the ambulance. 

"I've no idea how the car got there in the first place but it's a relief they were rescued."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 2.05pm on August 3 to reports of a vehicle which had entered the water at Castle Road, Port Glasgow.

“Operations control mobilised three fire appliances and firefighters assisted emergency service partners at the scene.

“Two casualties received checks from the Scottish Ambulance Service and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 2.05pm on August 3, we were called to a report of a car in the River Clyde near The Wharf, Port Glasgow.

"Two women made their way out of the vehicle before emergency services arrived.

"There are no reported injuries."
