A new car park is set to be created on the site of a demolished nursery building at a Barrhead primary school.
Fresh plans have been submitted by East Renfrewshire Council’s education department for land within the grounds of St Mark’s Primary.
It is intended to develop an additional car parking area, with 12 spaces, on the former Arthurlie Family Centre site to improve safety around the Roebank Drive school.
A council spokesperson said: “Following the demolition of the former Arthurlie Family Centre, it was agreed that using the land to create an additional parking area would support our ambitions of improving safety around St Mark’s Primary.
“Following a period of work to scope out the requirement of creating a car park on the site, if approved, this revised plan will support those ambitions.”
Plans to improve parking at the school were previously revealed in 2019 after parents raised fears that irresponsible drivers would cause a serious accident.
It was reported that parked cars were blocking the view of other motorists, and police gave guidance to parents picking up children from school.
Work will include “excavation and build-up of tarmac finish to road and pavement surface”. There will also be a new drainage layout, landscaping and alterations to the fencing.
A letter of support for the plan has been sent to the council, with a nearby resident expressing their delight with the application.
“This area has been an increasing eyesore for the area since the demolition of the old building several years ago,” the letter adds.
There are car parking spaces for disabled people “within the main car park closer to the building entrance”, the application states.
