Plans to provide a temporary extension to support pupils at a Glasgow secondary school have received council approval.
Officials have given the green light to a proposal to relocate a building from St Paul’s High School to Cardinal Winning School in Tollcross.
The unit will be used as a “shower room and breakout area for pupils with medical needs”. Planners have approved the use for a five-year period.
Cardinal Winning School, on Fullarton Avenue, caters for secondary aged children with additional learning needs. As well as installing the unit on the site, the council will construct a “link between the existing school”.
A council official said the addition of the building would “not typically” be “supported on a permanent basis due to the sustainability of these types of structures”.
They added: “The modular building is intended to serve as a shower room and breakout area for pupils with medical needs and will be located to the rear of the school, sufficiently screened from the street.”
It is therefore considered “acceptable on the basis that the consent is temporary for five years”.
Alterations to the appearance of the unit will be made following the transfer from St Paul’s as the “materials used on the structure differ from the materials of the school it is proposed to be attached to.
“Efforts have been made to make the modular structure more subtle in design, changing the existing fascia and doors from a blue/teal colour to a dark grey colour,” the official said.
It is expected work will be carried out during the school break in October.
When the application was submitted, a council spokeswoman said the space would “meet the needs of any young people who require additional, personal support”.
She added the plan was to “create a new discrete shower and changing area as well as a designated medical room for the school”.
