'Delighted' Residents have officially moved into the first homes erected at a former historical Glasgow site.

The Glasgow Meat Market, which was established back in 1879, has seen the first trance of 251 homes handed over to Residents recently.

Situated in the city's East End, the new development is hoping to 'bring back vibrancy to an area that has long been missing'.

Glasgow Times:

Audrey Simpson, director of Home in Scotland, the housing association in charge of the development, said: “It is great to see this historic site, left untouched for way too long, turned into fantastic homes that will enhance such an important community.

“We are delighted with the design and quality of the homes and look forward to people enjoying them and setting down long-term roots here.

“The fact we have delivered these homes, and many others recently across the city, is down to the strong working partnership we have with Glasgow City Council. We look forward to delivering many more homes in the city.”

Residents are said to be 'delighted' with the new homes, which have turned out to be 'everything' they had hoped for.

Aldo Matteo, a Mid-Market resident at Meat Market, said: “I’m delighted with my new flat as it’s everything I had hoped for.

"It’s spacious, it’s easy to heat due to the excellent insulation, very modern and in such a great location. I also love the view across Glasgow.

“Home Group staff have been great throughout the process and I’m now enjoying getting settled in.”

The recent move-in is just the first phase of a two-phase plan for the historical site to deliver over 500 homes.

Developed by the housing association and charity, Home in Scotland, the development plans were first approved back in 2019 and permission was unanimously approved by members of the City Council’s planning committee.

The development includes 79 one-bedroom flats and 173 two-bedroom flats, as well as twenty wheelchair-accessible flats located on the ground floor.

There will also be 30 car parking spaces and 18 cycle storage spaces located within dedicated internal storage rooms.

The Meat Market project is the latest development from Home Group in Glasgow.

The Glasgow Meat Market initially housed an inn, sheds and accommodation for sheep, bullocks and other livestock and was one of the last remaining markets in the country until it closed in the 1980s.
