A Glasgow resident was successfully compensated after not receiving universal credit due to a fault.
The Glasgow Central constituent received an underpayment of £523.45 after contacting the office of Alison Thewliss MP in September.
Their daughter arrived from Ethiopia in July 2023 through the family reunion scheme.
Upon arrival, she moved into the family home and only received one month of payment.
After raising the issue with their local Member of Parliament, the politician was able to contact the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to discuss this matter.
The response from DWP explained that universal credit payments include a child element if claimants are responsible for a child or a qualifying young person who normally lives with them.
The government body confirmed that due to a service failure, the constituent had not been given their money as expected.
Following the exchange, they received the full amount due and an extra £50 consolatory payment.

The constituent said: “Alison’s team were a huge support in all of this, and I can’t thank them enough for everything they have done for me.
“This was a worrying time for my family but I am just so happy that everything has now been sorted.
“If you find yourself in a similar position to mine, I’d definitely say it’s worth contacting your local MP to get the support in times of need.”
Alison Thewliss MP said: “Over the past few months, my constituent has been so patient throughout what must have been a distressing time for them and their family.
“My team were able to contact the DWP to raise these issues and I am happy to see that these have now been resolved.
“I want to give thanks to the DWP for their continuous dialogue throughout this case and their understanding of the difficulties being faced by the constituent.
“If any Glasgow Central constituents are in need of support, please do not hesitate to contact my office via email: alison.thewliss.mp@parliament.uk, or via phone call: 0141 552 7117.
“My team are always more than happy to help with a range of issues and urge any constituent to get in touch.”
