A 'failed' retail unit in the West End could be transformed into a new restaurant if plans are approved by the council.

Hospitality firm DRG, which operates over 20 restaurants across Scotland and in Newcastle, submitted plans to change the use of the former Peckham's deli on Byres Road from a Class 1A shop to a Class 3 food and drink outlet.

The family-owned independent restauranteurs are behind popular restaurants Di Maggio's, Cafe Andaluz, and Barolo.

They also operate plush city centre restaurants Amarone, Atlantic Brasserie, The Citizen Bar & Dining Rooms and The Anchor Line.

In a letter to the council's Development & Regeneration Services, planning advisors claimed that the unit at 124-126 Byres Road had been unable to sustain retail trading since 2017.

They wrote: "The last long-term occupier of the unit was Peckhams.

"Unfortunately, that business failed and the unit was purchased in 2017 with a view to continue operation as a delicatessen. That business failed."

They added: "In 2019, the property was occupied by the current tenant who opened as a Chinese supermarket. This business failed again.

"In 2022, the property was rebranded as Casey's, a convenience store, by the existing tenant.

"Caseys also failed and the tenant is now in default and has been for the whole of 2023.

"During this time the unit has been marketed for retail use but there has been no interest and no rental offer made."

DRG hopes that converting the outlet into a restaurant would bring the "struggling" shopfront into "productive use".

The last date for comments on the application is Monday, December 11.

The target date for the decision is Friday, January 5 2024.
