A mental health nurse has shared their advice for people who may be struggling over the festive period.

While Christmas and New Year can be an enjoyable time for people of all ages, it can also be stressful for numerous reasons.

Thomas, a mental health Nurse Practitioner at NHS 24, will be working right through the holidays as a lifeline for people who are struggling at this time of year.

He has shared his top tips for looking after yourself and staying well.

"Christmas is sometimes not good for people perhaps for reasons such as bereavement, isolation, or money worries," he said.

"I’d recommend trying not to compare your situation with the societal expectation of “festive fun”.

“Self-care is important, make sure you are doing what works for you, it’s okay to say no to anything that is not going to be helpful for you. i.e., burnt-out socialising, pressure to drink and eat out with your usual, crazy family demands or spending time with people who may not be helpful.

"Ensure you have time to recharge your batteries."

For anyone who is struggling with financial difficulties and the pressures of the Christmas period, Thomas has pinpointed some useful services.

He said: “If you’re worried about money, check out what can be done for free over the festive period – charities and housing associations often have free events and activities over this period.

"Also, check the Citizens Advice Bureau website to make sure you’re getting everything that you are financially entitled to."

While Christmas is commonly associated with family and coming together, Thomas recognises that not everyone feels they have someone to turn to.

Feeling isolated and alone can be common problems associated with poor mental health.

He said: “If you’re feeling isolated now might be the time to volunteer, helping others and connecting with people can have a huge impact on our mood and self-esteem.

"Additionally, know who you can go to if you worrying about your mental health – is there a trusted friend or family member you can talk to?

“Finally, know that you’re not alone there is a range of services that are happy to help should you feel concerned about your mental health.

"NHS Inform website is a really good resource for self-help and advice on mental health and wellbeing, including Mind to Mind which has more tips on managing things like low mood and anxiety.”
