A family have been left devastated after their one-year-old pup was mauled to death by another dog on New Year’s Day.

The family from Milton, which includes daughter Ashleigh, mum Frances and dad John, said they are "heartbroken" and "don’t know what to do" after their chihuahua Yuzuki was brutally killed in the fields near their home on January 1, 2024.

Glasgow Times:

Speaking to the Glasgow Times, Frances Cunningham said: “We’re all heartbroken. We don’t know what to do with ourselves. We just feel so lost.

“Our daughter, Ashleigh – who we bought the dog for last Christmas – is just devastated.

“It feels like we’ve lost a child.”

Glasgow Times:

The pup - who was affectionally known as Yuzu and Zuki – was killed “within seconds” Frances said.

Frances, 60, said: “I don’t think Yuzuki would have felt anything because it was over within seconds.

“It just came out of nowhere.

“I don’t know how many red lights John ran to get her to the emergency vets at Charing Cross, but she was dead on arrival.

“She was such a cute wee thing, just a teeny chihuahua.

“She was so young, and it was so sudden, it’s just tragic. We’re heartbroken.

“She did not deserve to be killed like this.”

Following Yuzuki’s death, the family have revealed their plans to potentially start a petition calling for dogs to be put if they cause the death of another pet.

Her action to campaign comes after police said the attack was dog-on-dog and there was nothing they could do.

She said: “If a dog bites someone one time, there’s no need to put it down. It could have been triggered by anything.

“But if a dog has previously attacked and hurt another dog, then kills another – there should be something in the law that says it can be put down because how many more dogs could it kill?

“The police said as it was dog-on-dog there was just nothing they could do.”

The crime was reported to cops after it occurred at around 9.45am on January 1. police passed the incident onto the Local Authority Dog Warden.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 12.45pm on Monday, January 1, 2024, we were made aware of a dog attacking another dog in the Milton of Glasgow.

"The dog which was attacked subsequently died.

"Officers are liaising with the local authority."

Vet's Now offered their condolences to the Cunningham family.

A Vet's Now spokesperson said: "Yuzuki was brought into the Vets Now hospital on New Year's Day after a dog attack.

"Unfortunately, she had already passed away when she arrived so our vet was unable to do anything to preserve life.

"Our thoughts are with Yuzuki’s family at this sad time."
