A number of Glasgow areas recorded an increase in flooding and blocked drains after severe weather despite gully unblocking by the council.

But five areas had fewer problems after the scheme.

Hyndland, Dowanhill and Partick East had 167 flooding problems reported in a 12 month period post 2022 to 2023 with 68 of complaints submitted during severe weather in October 2022.

Hillhead, Woodlands recorded 134 flooding and drainage issues with 24 reported in November 2022 during heavy rain.

Hyndland, Dowanhill and Partick East saw reports of flooding and blocked gullies rise by 73 during a timeframe measured by the council  while Greater Govan and Hillhead, Woodlands saw smaller increases.

Meanwhile the number of reports went down in Ibrox, Kingston, Pollokshields East, Tollcross, West Shettleston, Govanhill and Ballieston, Garrowhill.

Glasgow City Council compared reports of clogged gully and flooding issues before and after a clean up gully scheme.

The local authority runs a “risk based, cyclical gully maintenance programme” with gullies subject to flood risk emptied three times a year, those on main roads cleaned once annually and neighbourhood drains cleansed every two years.

The council is presenting a report on its response to flooding, gully maintenance and drainage capacity to the Operational Performance and Delivery Scrutiny Committee next week.

Baillieston and Garrowhill saw a large 64 number decrease in flood and blocked gully reports – down from 128 to 64 post 2022 to 2023.

Reports for flooding and obstructed gullies went down in Tollcross, West Shettleston by 38 to 58 post 2022 to 2023 while Pollokshields East saw a decrease of 29 reports.

The council compared annual average reports from the period 2019 to 2020 to 2021 to 2022 and the 12 month timeframe after the gullies in the neighbourhoods were cleaned post 2022 to 2023.

A council report said: “To quantify the effectiveness of the gully cleaning programme, for eight neighbourhoods, we have compared the annual average of blocked gully and flooding reports for the 3-year period prior to the introduction of the risk based, cyclical programme with the 12-month period after the gullies in these neighbourhoods were cleaned.”
