A man punched a stranger several times at Glasgow Queen Street station after a comment about women.

Darren Erskine, 37, was at the city centre travel hub on September 14, 2021.

He approached two people and asked if they were okay, and they replied "yes".

He sat down nearby and began talking to one of them, a man, who, as the conversation escalated, made a comment about women.

Erskine, of Bathgate, challenged the man to a fight.

He tried to punch Erskine but missed.

Erskine then threw four punches towards the man. The punches landed on his face, causing him to fall to the ground.

He was hit six more times while he lay on his back.

The other person present ran over to the pair and called the police.

Erskine was cautioned and charged. He said: “I hate misogynistic b******s. He tried to punch me first, I defended myself. Maybe I went too far.”

The man was bleeding and was taken to hospital, where he was found to have two lacerations, including to his left eye and swelling to his eye and cheek.

Erskine appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court this week, after he pleaded guilty to assault and repeatedly punching the man.

His lawyer said: "His view is that he is fit for unpaid work."

Sheriff Allan McKay said: "Thank you very much for cooperating. This is nasty in respect of the misogyny but you assaulted someone beyond all reasonableness."

Erskine was sentenced to 120 hours of unpaid work to be completed within six months.

He was also tagged for six months, requiring him to stay at home between 8pm and 6am between Monday and Friday.
