Major retailer in Glasgow city centre suddenly CLOSED

The unit behind Princes Square which housed designer brand Ted Baker has been cleared out and doors locked.

A sign posted on the door reads: "This store has now closed. For any returns or information please visit our other Ted Baker store at 61 Buchanan Street. 

"Sorry for any inconvenience."

UPDATE: Ted Baker has spoken about their future plans.

Katie Moody, centre director of Princes Square, said:  "We can confirm that after 36 years of trading in Princes Square, Ted Baker closed their store on Friday, January 12, 2024. 

"We are sad to see them go. We wish the staff well and look forward to confirming a new occupier for the unit very soon."

A Ted Baker UK and Europe Retail spokesperson said, “We can confirm the planned closure of our Glasgow Princes Square store, in line with our 2024 business strategy and ongoing optimisation of our retail estate.

"All team members from Princes Square wanting to stay with Ted remain in the business. We have ambitious plans to grow our bricks and mortar portfolio across the UK and Europe over the next 3 years.

"We’re excited to continue to serve our valued Ted customers, in our birthplace of Glasgow, at our nearby Buchanan Street store, less than 100 metres from Princes Square.”

The sudden closure comes after we reported that The Pen Shop had closed after 35 years.

The Pen Shop was one of the original stores in Princes Square when it opened in 1988.

But rising costs have forced the business to move out of the shopping centre.

A spokesperson for the Pen Shop said: "Sadly, after trading for over 35 years, the overhead costs continued to rise to a level that was unsustainable and we simply couldn't afford to continue to keep trading in the store.

"We still continue to trade with a full range on our website."
