A car showroom is to be demolished in Finnieston to make way for nearly 400 flats, shops and other businesses after plans were approved.
There is to be a new public square on the existing brownfield site, which was described as pretty “grubby” at a meeting on Tuesday.
The 394 homes are to be built in two blocks to include studios, one, two and three-bedroom apartments and maisonettes with their own front doors. The development will rise to 12 storeys in part and is surrounded by Minerva Street, West Greenhill Place and Finnieston Street.
The plans from Keltbray Developments Ltd faced 38 objections over the height, lack of social housing, risk of overshadowing and loss of daylight among other issues.
Barry Owens, representing Keltbray, said the firm has an interest in “developing a sustainable urban neighbourhood in Finnieston. ”
Another representative said during construction 250 jobs will be available on the site and 65 full-time jobs will be created after work finishes.
During a meeting today a resident raised the issue of lack of affordable housing in the development.
Describing it as a “great development,” Councillor Imran Alam, Labour pointed out the city had a “housing crisis” and having nearly 400 additional properties in an ideal location makes it an appealing development.
Conservative councillor Thomas Kerr said the development ”ticks a lot of boxes” with high-quality homes in a great location. He described the site at the moment as “pretty grubby.”
Although supportive, Councillor James Scanlon, Labour, said he is “miffed” about no social housing – pointing out there is a desperate need for it.
SNP councillor Declan Blench, SNP, described it as a “brilliant use” of a derelict site.
Committee chair councillor Ken Andrew said the development would reinvigorate a dead area.
The application was granted subject to 59 conditions at today’s planning applications committee.
There are to be 565 bike parking spaces and 47 car spaces with electric vehicles charging.
