A Glasgow man was jailed after he crashed his motorbike into a car and broke his femur.

John Welsh was driving a black unregistered motorbike on London Road in the East End shortly before 1pm on October 28, 2022.

When he reached the junction with Helenvale Street, he came off the pavement and smashed into a car waiting for a gap in traffic.

The 38-year-old crashed into the car’s offside window and door, which were damaged.

His leg was seriously injured and emergency services were called. Welsh, of Crosshill, was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Police officers carried out checks. The vehicle did not meet the requirements for an electric pedal cycle. It would be classed as a motorcycle or moped.

It was not properly registered or insured.

Welsh's driver’s licence was checked and cops realised he was disqualified from driving.

Police visited him in hospital, where he was arrested and charged, to which, he made no reply.

Then, around 1.25pm on May 1, 2023, he was spotted again by officers, riding an e-bike.

He was stopped and routine checks revealed he was disqualified from driving and he had no insurance.

He was cautioned and charged and made no reply.

Welsh appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court this week after he pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and without insurance and protective headgear.

He also admitted driving dangerously on the pavement and causing his motorbike to collide with a car.

His lawyer said: "He explained that the vehicle he collided with was at the junction of the pavement and he moved out onto the pavement. The car was edging out.

"He suffered a broken femur that still causes him difficulty.

"I explained to him that he might be able to claim a level of ignorance at the first charge but by the second one, he should have been aware that he should not be driving the vehicle.

"He is a 38-year-old man who lives with his partner and three children. 

"He has been to prison before." 

Sheriff Michael Hanlon said: "I don’t consider there is an alternative to a custodial sentence in this case."

Welsh was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison and was disqualified from driving for 53 months.
