A Glasgow man gave an empty bottle of Buckfast to a young child to play with after he got drunk for the King's Coronation.

Daniel Muchan, 62, was spotted by officers sitting on a bench at George Square just after 8pm on May 6, 2023.

He was drinking from a half-full bottle of Buckfast and had a young child with him.

After finishing the beverage, he gave the bottle to the kid, who seemed to be playing with it.

Muchan was talking to other people on the bench, who all left as cops approached.

The Parkhead man accused police of trying to arrest him for no reason. His speech was blurred, he was unsteady on his feet and he smelled strongly of alcohol.

He said he was celebrating the coronation of King Charles.

When speaking with police, Muchan lost sight of the child, who was playing on the grass.

Officers asked him who was looking after the youngster, and he said he was.

Muchan became aggressive, which caused the kid to cry. He was shouting and swearing.

Police lifted the child over to another officer.

Muchan said “f**k off”, “you f**king rat bastard”, “if I see you again without your hat on, I will header you”.

He was cautioned and charged. He replied: “Take these cuffs off me and I will show you my reply”, “Fenians”, “f**k the Pope”, “Humza Yousaf is a f**king p**i”.

He was taken to Helen Street police station.

At a hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court, his lawyer said: "He is 62 years old, he has got a strong work ethic. He is a commercial painter.

"At the time, he wasn’t working because he had a sore finger. It does not appear that there have been plans to go drinking.

"He was with friends before in Airdrie. He met up with several friends who suggested to go to the square. Drinking seems to be the catalyst.

"The offences in the past have been when he has been drinking. He has very little recollection. He has shame for the words and actions of the day.

"He wishes he had just gone home."

Sheriff Joan Kerr said to Muchan: "The words expressed to the police officers are quite disgraceful and have no place in our society.

"The child saw you behave in that way and you placed them in a degree of danger. This has become a very real alcohol issue, which you have expressed a real desire to address."

He was sentenced to 18 months of supervision.

The sheriff added: “If you are told to attend addiction services, you need to do so."
