Warning as ambulance 'delayed' due to Glasgow road closure

The West End woman, who asked to remain anonymous, had an asthma attack in November last year and her neighbour called 999.

A crew was dispatched to help her but due to the work signage placement and cars parking on a narrow street, the ambulance had to take a longer route.

The incident came to light at a recent meeting of North Kelvinside Community Centre.

She said: "They came within 10 minutes and they came down Queen Margaret Road because there are no diversion signs at the entrance.

"But they found that it was blocked off.

"So, they turned around and came down Doune Gardens but couldn't get through because the road wasn't wide enough.

"Then, they spoke to my neighbour and eventually got here."

She was treated and is well today.

However, she has warned that the lack of signage at the front of the road and vehicles parked on the side of the roads could eventually lead to disaster.

She added: "Luckily, it wasn't a heart attack or a stroke, or I would have been in real trouble.

"What concerns me is that if someone had a condition where time was absolutely crucial, they would have wasted all that time not knowing what to do."

Delivery trucks are also often lost in the area, causing locals hassle and annoyance.

The woman said: "My neighbour has actually missed a delivery because they couldn't get here.

"I have no idea what is happening about this road, we get no information.

"There are still no diversion signs on the bridge. It's been like that for months and months.

"The sign that was there was trashed and the fence has been pushed back.

"At the other end, there is no sign at all until you are halfway down. There, it says 'road closed' with no instructions on what to do.

"You have to find your way back.

"It is a big problem.

"If there are parked cars along the road, then we are completely cut off."

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: “Queen Margaret Road has been closed since October 2022 due to safety issues.

“Signposting is in place for the road closure and the diversion route along Wilton Street and Kelvinside Terrace.

“The signposting for the road closure and the diversion route along Wilton Street and Kelvinside Terrace is regularly inspected and maintained.

“We understand the driver in this instance has attempted access to this home via Doune Gardens, which is a long-standing no-through-road.”

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call at 7.48am on November 28 to attend an incident on Dounde Quadrant in Glasgow and dispatched one ambulance to the scene.

"We hope the patient is recovering well.”
