The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office have released a statement after a Rangers fan died in Lisbon. 

The Glasgow Times previously reported that Thomas McAllister, 25, passed away in the capital following the Glasgow club's UEFA Europa League tie with the Portuguese giants.

The club confirmed the tragic news today as they offered their 'immediate thoughts to Thomas’ family and friends'

Now, the Foreign Office have confirmed that they are offering assistance in the matter and are in contact with Portuguese authorities.

No details have been revealed yet about the circumstances surrounding his death. 

A FCDO Spokesperson said: “We are providing consular assistance to the family of a British man who has died in Lisbon, and are in contact with Portuguese authorities."

Tributes quickly poured in for the former Drumchapel High School pupil this afternoon. 

In tributes on Facebook, One woman said: "You've left us all heartbroken, still can't come to terms with this news."

She revealed that Mr McAllister was a dad adding: "Watching you grow from that tiny beautiful blonde haired boy to such an amazing daddy to your beautiful kids, you made us all proud.

"Tommy tuck, this is a hard one. One as a family we will need to support your mum, your beautiful kids and as a community. Lost another young life far to soon.

"Sleep tight, going to miss that big smile and laugh of yours."

Another friend said he would be "sorely missed" and revealed he was known as Tam to friends. 

She added: "A cheeky, funny amazing character. What a boy, Tam. You will be sorely missed, buddy." 

A further tribute read: "Gutted, I don't even know what to say. I never thought I'd have to write this. RIP Thomas." 

A relative continued: "Cannot get my head around this. You were the best cousin ever, love you always." 

Famous Rangers pub The louden Tavern took to Facebook, writing: "Heartbreaking.

"Our thoughts and love go to Thomas’ family and friends."

Meanwhile, Singer Callum Beattie led celebrity tributes saying he was sad to learn of the passing. 

The 34-year-old Edinburgh-born star, who is a huge fan of Light Blues, said: "That's so sad. Sending thoughts and love to his family."

Former club legend Nacho Novo added: "RIP. Sending thoughts and love to his family."

Ex-player Michael Mols, who underwent brain tumour surgery late last year, added: "RIP."

Rangers fought out a 2-2 draw with Benfica.
