Plans to turn Shawfield Stadium into hotel, homes and shops

The dilapidated Shawfield Stadium in South Lanarkshire is subject to a planning application which seeks to convert it into a large housing and retail development.

According to plans, the site would consist of 450 residential units, a hotel with 150 bedrooms and significant commercial space.

The grass area in the middle, which was used as a football pitch, then for greyhound racing until 2020, would become a park.

Around it, the buildings would be built in a semi-oval shape.

The ground beneath the former Clyde FC home ground would be used as a car parking facility.

And the hotel and the two commercial sites would sit in three corners of the land.

The development would be part of the Clyde Gateway project, which covers the areas of Bridgeton, Dalmarnock, Oatlands, Toryglen and Rutherglen.

It aims to "establish itself as one of the foremost places in the West of Scotland to live and work" with a target of 10,000 homes.

Documents also say that the development is near several bus routes and supermarkets.

They added: "However, the local area would benefit from better local walkable shopping.

"This was a point made by several visitors to the public consultation events."

The council's planning committee is considering the bid and a decision is expected by Friday, July 5.
