A HOMELESS Glasgow man told police he had a knuckleduster to defend himself.

Officers on Sauchiehall Street stopped Cameron Bekker around 3.45pm one day after their attention was drawn to him.

They searched him and found a knuckleduster in his left chest pocket.

He was arrested and his details were taken but he gave officers three false names.

Bekker was taken to Govan police station, where he was arrested and charged.

He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court this week after pleading guilty to carrying the weapon and providing false names.

His lawyer said: "He has obtained accommodation since but he was homeless at the time and was the victim of an assault sometime before.

“He shared this with others in the homeless community and somebody gave him the weapon to defend himself.

“He knows this is not an excuse.

“He has an outstanding order in Manchester, that is why he gave a false name.

“He is taking prescribed medication and is also in contact with his mother.”

Bekker was sentenced to 12 months of supervision and ordered to do 100 hours of unpaid work.
