A thug guilty of a brutal 17-second murder bid on a man has been jailed for six years.

Lewis Wilson, 31, and two accomplices pounced on Robert Meikle shortly after he left a shop in Paisley on June 9 2023.

The 35-year-old victim suffered five horror wounds consistent with being hit by a machete-type weapon.

Wilson appeared via video-link on Wednesday to be sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow.

He had pleaded guilty in February to a charge of attempted murder.

Judge William Gallacher told him: "I described it at the last hearing as a brutal and murderous attack.

"I am also concerned that the public have to be adequately protected when you are released."

As a result, Wilson - who had been on two bail orders at the time - will be supervised for a further three years when he is freed.

Prosecutor BJ Gill earlier told how Mr Meikle had been repeatedly struck on the back and side in what was a "violent and frenzied" assault.

Mr Gill said the victim continued to be set upon in an incident that lasted a total of 17 seconds before the assailants fled.

Mr Meikle ended up being rushed to hospital and was described as being at the "highest level of seriousness".

The court heard he needed surgery, is scarred for life and was only able to leave hospital three days later.

Wilson, also of Paisley, is already serving a jail-term for a weapon-related offence.

His lawyer Des Ziolo said: "He had let his family down and he knows the angst caused to the victim and his relatives."
