Details have emerged after plans were approved for a new village project near Glasgow. 

We reported on Thursday that South Lanarkshire Council will enter a partnership with Social Bite to develop a 15-unit homeless village at Harriet Street, Rutherglen.

The proposed village will be situated on a brownfield site and will consist of 15 modern, sustainable modular homes, known as Nest Houses, accompanied by a community hub and an outdoor gym facility.

The new model is hoping to emulate the success of Social Bite's existing village in Edinburgh which opened in 2018 and has already supported over 100 people.

Glasgow Times:

It has now been confirmed that Social Bite will be entering into a community consultation stage and applying for planning permission following the decision made by South Lanarkshire Council.

The construction of the homes and hub is expected to begin in Autumn 2025 with the first residents expected to move in by Summer of 2025.

The energy-efficient modular housing, with housing support, will assist our customers who are faced with homelessness and the trauma that this brings.

“This exciting partnership will bring training and employment opportunities to our customers, will invest in the local community and support community wealth. This addition to our temporary accommodation comes at an integral point where South Lanarkshire are experiencing unprecedented levels of homelessness.”
