A new pergola and bench have been added in Glasgow's Alexandra Park.

The additions, created to commemorate lost loved ones, alongside a new path and two wooden archways, were funded by a £17,000 investment from the council's Dennistoun Area Partnership.

These new features are part of the Peace Garden project by the council and the Friends of Alexandra Park Group.

Councillor Allan Casey, local councillor and Chair of Dennistoun Area Partnership, said: “The pergola provides a lovely focal point in the Peace Garden where people can sit and remember lost loved ones.

"When complete, the Peace Garden will also provide a tranquil location within the park where people can lay tributes in memory of people who have passed away.

“The council is working closely with the Friends of Group to source funding to create this dedicated space within the park where people will be able to sit, surrounded by nature while recalling fond memories of people who have passed away.”

The ideas was conceived during the Covid-19 pandemic, William McLaughlin, chair of the Friends of Alexandra Park Group, said adding that it will be a place of silent reflection for those mourning lost loved ones.

He said: “I would like thank the Dennistoun Area Partnership for helping us fund the Peace Garden, also the local councillors that have helped us along the way and of course the local community - without you we would not have a Friends Group.”

The funds also facilitated the installation of several new black metal picnic benches which are wheelchair friendly, located next to the children’s play area.
