A man was jailed after he stole chocolate, confectionery and a bike.

Marcu Caroleu was seen on CCTV stealing a pedal bike from Allison Street on July 2, 2022. This was later recovered by cops.

He was searched and a black and blue imitation firearm was found in his bag.

Caroleu then came to the attention of Lidl workers on Jamaica Street on August 1, 2022.

He was seen filling a carrier bag with chocolate. He did not have a shopping basket or trolley.

A worker followed him as he continued to place items in his bag.

The 32-year-old then walked towards the exit but employees asked him to come back inside.

He was escorted to a private room where he lunged towards one worker and tried to headbutt him, narrowly missing.

He was restrained but he continued to try and lunge. He was taken to the ground.

Police were called and arrived just after 3pm. He was arrested and taken to Cathcart police station, where he was cautioned and charged.

The items, worth £50.06, were fully recovered.

Finally, he was caught nicking a quantity of confectionery at Aldi in the Crown Street Retail Park on April 19, 2023. This was worth £85.26 and fully recovered.

This time, a six-inch metal tent peg was recovered from his backpack.

Caroleu, of no fixed address, appeared from custody at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week after he pleaded guilty to several charges of theft, carrying weapons and failing to appear in court.

His lawyer said: "He is 32 years old. At the moment, he is single, he has no status in this country, he is Romanian.

"There are three other outstanding matters before the court. He accepts full responsibility. He apologises for his behaviour."

Sheriff Mark McGuire replied: "I am not somebody who will set a person up to fail with an order they cannot complete.

"It appears he does not have a fixed address. Social workers would have no realistic way of getting in touch with him.

"If he doesn’t know about the appointments, he won’t turn up and he will be in breach. Because of this, the only appropriate way is a custodial sentence."

The lawyer accepted.

The sheriff turned to Caroleu and told him: "Your solicitor has accepted that in the absence of a fixed address, the only means of reliable conduct is a jail term.

"You are not in a position to carry out a community-based disposal. These offences, in my judgment, are too serious for a fine or admonition.

"The threshold of custody is just. It can only be imposed if there is no other alternative. I take into account everything that your solicitor said on your behalf.

"I  want to bring home to you the seriousness of carrying sharp objects in public."

Caroleu was sentenced to a six-month prison term, backdated to when he was first held in custody.
