Around 500 student flats could be built on a vacant brownfield in Glasgow.

Valeo Management Europe has started proceedings to build a mixed-use development on Carrick Street.

The site would contain around 500 student flats and a "flexible commercial unit is also proposed to serve the new and growing community in Broomielaw".

Currently, the land is home to the GAP Group headquarters.

If successful, the proposal will also retain, and integrate into the design the modern Glasgow City Mission building.

Previously, this was earmarked for demolition as part of plans for a new office development on the site.

Papers say the development would address the "shortfall in student beds in the city".

A Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) has been submitted to Glasgow City Council, kickstarting the 12-week minimum pre-application statutory consultation period.

The first of two consultation events will take place on Tuesday, June 18 from 3pm to 7pm at Box Hub on Washington Street.

David Saunders, Managing Director, Valeo Management Europe, said: “We are delighted to bring forward plans for new purpose-built student accommodation in Glasgow city centre.”

“The Broomielaw and wider River Clyde Waterfront is undergoing significant transformation, and we hope that our plans will go somewhere to support this transition as well as providing much-needed student rooms in Glasgow.

“We look forward to engaging with local residents and other interested parties over the coming months as we develop our exciting new plans for Carrick Street.”
