A 14-week project of maintenance works on two major motorways is set to begin in June.

The works will take place at a number of different locations on the M80 between Junctions 2 (Robroyston Interchange) and 7 (Haggs Interchange) and the M73 between Junctions 3 (Mollinsburn Interchange) and the M80.

The programme will consist of various maintenance activities, including the installation of new safety barriers, the replacement of bridge joints, surfacing repairs, various cyclic maintenance activities and structural concrete repairs.

Road workers will work in phases over the 14-week period, moving on to the next section in the project once the various works are completed at each location.

During the works, to keep staff safe, sections of the M80 and the M73 will be closed overnight between 8pm and 6am - with signed diversions in place.

Details of the works, their locations, and restrictions are as follows: 

  • June 9 until June 27: 

Installation of high containment safety barrier works will take place at Westfield footbridge on the M80s southbound carriageway between Junctions 4a and 4.

They will be carried out using overnight lane closures for two weeks - then an overnight carriageway closure for one week.

  • June 24 until August 15

Structural joint replacements, surfacing repairs, and cyclic maintenance works will be carried out at various locations on the two motorways.

During these works, an overnight carriageway and slip road closures will be in place.

  • August 19 until September 13

During this period, structural concrete repairs will be completed on the M80 northbound and southbound carriageways at Junction 4a.

Overnight lane closures will be in place during these works.

Carnie Morrison, Highway Management (Scotland) Limited General Manager, said: “This essential programme of maintenance works will help ensure that the M80 and M73 motorways are kept in a safe condition.

“The works will be carried out overnight when traffic flows are reduced, to minimise delays as much as possible.

“Road closures are vital to ensure the safety of the workforce and motorists, however we will look to complete these works as quickly and safely as possible.

The works are being carried out by various contractors including BEAR Scotland, Highway Barrier Solutions (HBS), Diack and Macaulay Limited and Castle Group Scotland Limited on behalf of Highway Management (Scotland) Limited. 

They have also been planned in consultation with Transport Scotland and North Lanarkshire Council.
