A much-loved store that has been open in East Kilbride for over 50 years has 'closed its doors'.

Olympia Pets - which is based on Righead Gate in the town - took to social media to announce the sad news on June 1.

The pet shop - who claimed to be the 'longest trading pet store in East Kilbride - said they have had 'no choice' but to 'close their doors' due to a declined insurance claim for flooding.

While revealing the sad news, the shop thanked all its customers over the years for their 'loyalty, support, and kindness'.

Bosses of the business also said that they were 'absolutely devastated' to announce the news.

In the Facebook post, the store said: "It's with the heaviest of hearts that we have had no choice but to close our doors due to a declined insurance claim for the flooding we experienced.

 "We want to take this opportunity to express how grateful we are for your loyalty, support and kindness over the years.

"You have been friends to us, not only customers. We have loved serving you, our community and your pets.

"We had the best job because of all of you!

"Dog grooming clients will all be contacted shortly with a change of location and contact details.

"We are all absolutely devastated and will miss you all and wish you all the best.

"Thank you for everything.

"Olympia pets team."

Following the gutting announcement, punters of the store expressed their sadness about the news in the comments of the post.

One person said: "So sorry to read this. The end of an era."

Another sad customer said: "I'm going to miss you guys.

"Been a customer since I was five and you were at the arcade and now I take my daughter and she loves it. 

"Wishing you all the best in the future."

A third chimed: "This is such a shame.

"You guys have worked so hard to keep this business going. You are always so friendly and so caring to your animals and customers."

Meanwhile, a fourth added: "Really saddened to hear this.

"Pillar of the East Kilbride community. Many happy memories of visiting your shop from a very young age."

A fifth said: "Devastated for you all guys. Thank you for the service, the laughs, and the love you shared with us all over the years."
