Shocking images show a former primary school engulfed in flames in 'heartbreaking' scenes.
Firefighters raced to Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge at around 7.45pm on Sunday following reports of a fire in the area.
The building affected was the former Gartsherrie Primary School, but it is now derelict and thankfully there have not been any injuries in the blaze.
Images shared with the Glasgow Times show the devastation the fire has caused to the building.
Many of its windows, originally boarded up when it went out of use, are now caved in with flames filling the inside of the school and poking out the windows.
The roof appears to be almost completely caved in and a thick cloud of smoke could be seen billowing from the top of the building.
Local residents were pictured standing and watching in horror at the scenes as 999 crews worked to extinguish the fire.
They shared their thoughts on the shocking incident, with one saying: "Heartbreaking."
Another added: "Aww this is such a shame, heartbreaking."
The feelings of sadness were echoed by local MSP Fulton MacGregor, who said: "Sad night, especially for those with memories of attending school there."
Police are advising people to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed as a precaution.
A spokesperson said: "Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge is closed at Frederick Street and Blair Road due to an ongoing fire at a derelict building. There are no reports of any injuries. As a precaution, we are advising local residents to remain indoors and keep their windows and doors closed."
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.45pm on Sunday, June 8 to reports of a fire in a derelict building on Gartsherrie Road, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.
