Plans have been unveiled to redevelop an empty 1970s building in Glasgow city centre.

Developer McLaren Property is consulting on early-stage proposals to transform an old office block at 285 Bath Street and bring the site back into use.

They wish to convert the building into student accommodation to free up existing residential buildings that could make more homes available to local residents.

Preliminary designs for the accommodation include amenities such as a gym, bike storage and a roof garden.

The site is located near the Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow Caledonian University, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, and Strathclyde University.

On the ground floor, there is a provision for a commercial space that could be used as a base for a local group, a cafe, or a retail unit.

If given the go-ahead, this project would create around 300 jobs.

McLaren Property specialises in student accommodation and is part of the wider McLaren Group, which includes McLaren Living and McLaren Regeneration and has developed over £1.5bn in projects across the UK.

The firms have a combined pipeline of £4.8bn across 41 sites that could see the creation of a further 17,500 homes.

McLaren Property's divisional managing director, David Atherton, said: "It's fantastic to be putting forward our initial proposals to bring this Glasgow city centre site back to life.

"We want to deliver best-in-class student homes to the city, which will help address the widely reported shortage of student accommodation and support both the universities and Glasgow to retain and develop young talent."

The local community is invited to view the details and meet the team on Tuesday, June 18 at The Renfield Centre, 260 Bath Street, G2 4JP.
