A SEX predator who raped a woman looking for help in the street has been jailed for five years.

Kinfe Gebreyes pounced on his victim - who was vulnerable and alone that night - at his then-flat in Glasgow's Bridgeton on August 28, 2021.

The 39-year-old - who had denied the accusation - was convicted of the attack by a jury last month.

Gebreyes was today sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow.

Judge John McCormick stated: "The woman was a trusting female seeking assistance from strangers.

"She met with a man and a woman who tried to assist her.

"She decided to walk home and she met you. She went to your home so that you could charge your phone and call a taxi.

"Instead, it was there that you assaulted and raped her."

Gebreyes, latterly of the city's Dennistoun, was also put on the sex offenders list indefinitely.

The hearing today was earlier told that Gebreyes - believed to be originally from Eritrea in East Africa - continues to protest his innocence.

Marco Guarino, defending, said: "There is the indication, understandably, from the Home Office that deportation proceedings will be considered.

"The likelihood is that on completion of the sentence he will, firstly spending time in a facility such as Dungavel (Immigration Removal Centre) while consideration is given to his status in the UK."
