A man caught with a machete outside a block of flats was jailed today for 14 months.

John Stewart, 37, was found with the weapon in Glasgow's Great Western Road on November 18, 2023.

The city's Sheriff Court heard that the concierge heard shouting coming from outside the foyer area.

Stewart arrived at the scene when he produced a "large, black-handled machete."

Prosecutor Claire Wallace said: "He pointed it at Steven Dolan senior and junior and acted in an aggressive manner.

"They were then involved in an argument about an unknown matter."

Stewart backed off into a car which was later stopped by the police.

The weapon and Stewart were both spotted inside and he was arrested.

Stewart pleaded guilty to having a machete without a reasonable excuse or lawful authority.

He also admitted to conducting himself in a disorderly manner and committed breach of the peace.

Gary Young, defending, told the court that his client "fell off the wagon" and had been drinking with a friend that day.

The lawyer said: "There was some history and some argument which we don't know the detail.

"He went back to the car and he did not get out of it again.

"He is at an age now that he has got quite a lot to live for on the outside as his daughter is expecting his grandchild."

Sheriff Barry Divers told Stewart, who was remanded in custody, that custody was the "appropriate sentence."
