A legendary Glasgow singer has been honoured with a prestigious award.

Sharleen Spiteri of Texas was given the Chevalier medallion at the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) in France.

The accolade recognises and celebrates the Bellshill-born artist's contribution to music and comes ahead of Texas' The Very Best Of arena tour which features two Glasgow dates.

Previous recipients of the Chevalier include Australian singer Kylie Minogue, filmmaker Tim Burton, illustrator Quentin Blake and actors Uma Thurman, Jude Law and George Clooney.

Texas rose to fame in 1989 with their debut album Southside and this year they released a collaboration album, The Muscle Shoals Sessions, with acclaimed American songwriter & pianist Spooner Oldham.

Sharleen grew up on Minerva Street in the city's Finnieston and worked as a hairdresser before getting her big break with Texas, which was formed with Ally McErlaine and Johnny McElhone, formerly of Glasgow bands Altered Images and Hipsway.

Sharleen said: "It's amazing that I've been honoured in this way for the work of Texas and for our long, long history with France.

"I feel very special and very emotional still and it's great to have been around so many wonderful people that have helped me get there as well.

"So to everyone in France and to the people that decided that I should be given this, I thank you."

Texas will play the Hydro on September 14 and 15, 2024.
