Elizabeth McCrone, director of Heritage at HES, said: "The Glasgow Central Mosque is a distinctive local landmark and an important building both in terms of its architecture and the role it has played in the historical development of the Scottish Muslim community.
"We welcome comments through our consultation on our proposal to designate the Glasgow Central Mosque, and we welcome information that can further increase our understanding of the building and its use."
Completed between 1979 and 1984, the mosque in Gorbals, one of Scotland's first purpose-built mosques, incorporated Islamic architectural traditions into the design, but it also includes features such as a courtyard and an Arabesque garden.
The mosque's use of red brick, pigmented red concrete, and terracotta tiles were a nod to Glasgow's local practice of using red sandstone in building construction.
It also serves as a social historical interest for Scotland's Muslim history, having played a significant role in the community's growth in the latter half of the 1900s, while also operating as a centre for education in the Islamic faith.
