A legendary singer once got into a 'scuffle' with stewards at Celtic Park - and Hoopy the Hound.

The late Shane MacGowan of the Pogues performed with good friend and fellow musician John McLaughlin at Parkhead when Celtic won the league title in 2002.

John, who is performing a stage show tribute to MacGowan in Edinburgh next month, has opened up about a hilarious moment that day that was 'typical Shane'.

He said the Irish artist got into a little bit of bother with the staff and even the club mascot after bringing a bottle of booze with him.

John told the Scottish Sun: “Shane was typical Shane the day Celtic won the league when he tried to walk onto the park with a bottle of Jack Daniels but ended up getting into a scuffle with the stewards as they took it off him.

“Then he had a wee wrestle with Hoopy the Huddle Hound and missed his cue. So he sang my lines and I sang his.

“But he was a total genius the way he would absorb all the stories he heard, or you told him, and he would end up singing these amazing lyrics without even writing anything down.

“Shane could deliver a song straight from his boots - he poured his soul into it. I was blessed to have known him."

For The Love of Shane MacGowan will show for five nights at The Voodoo Rooms as part of the Edinburgh Festival where John will be joined by the singer’s widow Victoria Mary Clarke.

MacGowan died in November 2023 following years of struggling with his health
