Fresh plans to build family townhouses with gardens on the site of a car park at a former pub in Glasgow's Southside have been revealed.

White Elephant Property Limited is behind the plans at 134 Merrylee Road. They submitted a proposal to Glasgow City Council asking for planning permission to build six homes with car parking and landscaping.

The site is where the car park was located at the back of the former pub The White Elephant, and planning permission was previously granted in April to turn the existing building into a convenience store.

Now developers want to build six terraced-style four-bedroom homes with two parking spaces each on underused land to the rear of the pub site.

It is understood that the townhouses will be within two three-storey buildings.

The planners also assured that the proposal's high-quality design of the homes will benefit future residents with allocated parking space which is convenient and would not impact on street parking.

They added that the proposed homes would have allocated storage to store bicycles to encourage sustainable travel.

Developers claim that their plans mimic a neighbouring three-storey housing development located to the east of the application site sitting at the corner plot of Merrylee Road and Clarkston Road.

A planning statement said: "The proposal is compatible and appropriate for the area, and will provide dwelling houses with efficient use of underused brownfield site.

"The design and finish will be appropriate for the locality, reinforcing and enhancing the character of the area."

A planning statement added: "The proposed development creates various sustainable benefits for the local community, providing alternative shops and products for the local residents, and encouraging local development.

We previously reported that the convenience store plan which involved partially demolishing the pub would create 15 new jobs. The plan said 15 to 20 parking spaces would be created "helping to meet the day-to-day needs of local residents."

Previously, the same company bid twice to tear down the site and build 20 flats in its place.

These proposals were rejected by the council.

A decision by Glasgow City Council planners is expected by Tuesday, September 17. The last date for comments is Wednesday, August 28.
