The funeral for the owner of a popular Italian restaurant has taken place.

Eataliano revealed that their owner Manio was laid to rest in his hometown in Italy and they are now planning a memorial service in tribute to him. 

The Hamilton-based diner previously closed its doors in late July as a mark of respect with staff revealing they were heartbroken following the death.

Now the restaurant will reopen on Thursday. 

In a new statement, the restaurant, based in the town's Almada Street, said: "Following the loss of Manio the restaurant will reopen on Thursday, August 8 at 11.45am.

"Manio was laid to rest in his hometown in Italy on Thursday.

"There will be a memorial service for Manio once the details have been confirmed we will let all customers know.

"Can we thank all customers for the kind words, cards, and messages."

Customers responded to the news on Facebook with one saying: "Glad your opening again.

"We are still in shock and still can’t believe what happened.

"Manio was a lovely man and was well respected.

"So sad what happened. Hope all the staff and Manio's family will heal in time.

"We will miss him terribly."

Another added: "He will be sorely missed by all but I would think he would want the show to go on.

"Still shocked and stunned."
