The family of a Celtic fan who vanished last year in Spain plans to make a fresh appeal over his whereabouts. 

The desperate loved ones of Gary Watson Shearer made the announcement after Spanish cops told them in June they had "exhausted all leads".

The Renfrew man travelled to the resort of Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote in March last year to celebrate St Patrick's Day.

Gary fell in love with the island after a holiday there with his dad the previous December.

A statement circulating Facebook said: "In the next couple of days Gary's family will be doing a fresh appeal.

"They will speak directly to Gary just in case he is able to see social media.

"They will share pictures of him in case Gary having epilepsy, a seizure may have triggered confusion.

"They miss Gary and want him home safe where he belongs."

The statement added: "Gary has been missing a year now.

"There has been no new leads and unfortunately the police over there didn't really help .

"They have closed Gary's case but his family are still searching and we will continue to help them until Gary is found."

What happened to Gary?

Like thousands of Scots every single year Gary set off from his hometown of Renfrew to travel to Spain where he arrived on March 16.

At the airport, he grabbed a coach transfer to the Oasis apartments where he was staying in Puerto Del Carmen.

There he put his case down and put some items in a safe including his spending money.

Police know Gary took €70 out with him as the receipt for the transaction he got was in an envelope along with the rest of this spending money. Gary's family says police handed the spending money from the safe back to them.

Gary's captured on CCTV with mystery man

Gary sent a text message to his mum Ann McMurray at around 5.30pm. He told her he was heading out. 

He was seen on CCTV at a Spar shop. This sighting also features a man who may or may not have spoken to Gary, and appeals have been made for him to come forward.

The mystery man was seen walking alongside Gary on March 17. 

He is described as being from 60 to 70 years old, well-built, with grey hair and he was wearing a light brown sports jacket, white shirt, and long dark trousers.

Bar 67

Gary asked for directions to the Celtic pub Bar 67 which is situated near the Spar shop. This bar is a sports bar he goes to for food and drink. This is the last time he's seen. We previously reported  CCTV cameras show he was lying unconscious in a shop doorway next to the pub at around 1.30am on March 17.

His phone last pinged at Bar 67 and went straight to voicemail when his family rang it. Gary had a black phone cover with a Celtic logo on it.

What does Gary look like?

Gary had his new trainers on the day he vanished and had posted an image of them on Facebook.

Gary has noticeable scars which are highlighted in the photos and tattoos on one arm with another tattoo of his name on his neck. Those searching for him say they have visited tattoo parlours in the resort in case he went there.

Gary is approximately 5ft 3 inches. He was wearing his Celtic top, white shorts, new trainers, and a black man bag.

He also had a gold chain with a cross pendant on it. Gary always wore his jewellery, and those looking for him are considering this may have been pawned. They have contacted stores that specialise in this to see if records were kept. 

Gary walks with a limp and also has epilepsy and type two diabetes.

Family's search for Gary 

Hi family including sister Michelle have called him everyday since he went missing over a year ago. 

They have contacted the media, pages on the island, taxi companies, car hires, restaurants, bars and pubs, shops in a bid to find someone who knows something. 

A friend of the family who helped in the searches for Gary who lives in Lanzarote will be checking the homeless communities and the clinics that help them.

He's also going to be checking a beach in Playa Blanca where a homeless man was seen by a tourist.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: "We are supporting the family of a British National missing in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities."
