A community is in shock after a horrific machete attack left a man 'soaked in blood'.

999 crews raced to Whinfell Gardens in East Kilbride in the early hours of Wednesday after two men were said to have been attacked by a group of armed thugs.

It is claimed the gang broke into a home and demanded money from the pair, and one was left with a 'severed' hand in the assault, GlasgowLive reported.

Now a concerned neighbour has spoken of their fear since the attack.

She said that locals raised the alarm after being woken up by screams and calls for help.

Speaking to GlasgowLive, the neighbour said: "I woke up to screams asking for help and for the police and ambulance to be phoned.

"I looked out of my window and saw someone bent over holding their hand but I couldn't see who it was. I thought it was just some drunk boys who had been fighting until I saw my neighbour run out.

"That's when I realised it was serious. When I went out I realised it was our neighbour that I had known since he was young.

"He was holding his arm and was soaked in blood, his hand was barely attached. Blood was everywhere.

"The street was then filled with neighbours who had run out to help. Some people were phoning for police and ambulance, others were giving first aid."

The frightened neighbour is now worried for her safety and the safety of her children and says this feeling is shared by her neighbours who are described as a 'close-knit' community.

She added: "Everyone who lives in this estate knows each other. Everyone who lives here has been here for 30 years.

"It's a quiet neighbourhood and most of the residents are older. It's the sort of community where we ask each other for sugar; it's a very close-knit community. I've known the boys that were attacked since they were young.

"You don't expect this sort of thing to happen. I think we are all in shock.

"I've got kids and I'm worried these people will come back."

Cops are still investigating the attack and no arrests have been made so far.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 1.05am on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, we were called to a report of an assault at premises in Whinfell Gardens, East Kilbride.

“Emergency services attended and two men 34 and 37 aged were taken to Wishaw General Hospital for treatment.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
