A restaurant owned by the same family since 1972 has been sold to a Glasgow restaurant boss.

When the Tang family opened the New Pak Yee restaurant in Wishaw, it was said to be the first Chinese eatery to operate in the North Lanarkshire area.

After an incredible five decades, the owner is retiring and the venue has been sold to the operators of the Indian restaurant Obsession of India, based in the city's High Street.

They plan to refurbish the spot before opening as Obsession of Shahbaz, a restaurant and takeaway serving Indian cuisine, in late August to early September.

The sale was managed by business associates Smith & Clough, who said the transaction included accommodation above the restaurant premises as well.

They said: "We are pleased to announce the sale of the New Pak Yee restaurant which had been owned by our clients, the Tang family since 1972 and was the first Chinese restaurant in North Lanarkshire.

"The sale included spacious living accommodation above as well as a separate flat, which offered development potential.

"The property has been bought by existing Indian restaurateurs who currently operate the Obsession of India restaurant in Glasgow, and they are in the process of refurbishing the premises before opening as Obsession of Shahbaz, an Indian restaurant & takeaway, at the end of August/beginning of September.

"We would like to wish the new owners all the best with their new venture, as well as wishing our client Mrs Tang a long and well-deserved retirement."
