A young patient at a hospital in the city will lead Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity's annual sponsored walk.

The Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity is hosting its first Kami Bear's Teddy Trail, inviting individuals and families to join in a fun-filled day of walking with their favourite teddy bears on September 14.

Millie McAusland, a patient at The Royal Hospital for Children, will be at the front of the walk with the charity mascot Kami Bear and her parents and teddy bear, Maisie.

The two-year-old's journey began with her birth at 26 weeks via emergency C-section, following severe maternal health complications caused by Covid.

Her mother, Steph, from East Kilbride, was placed in a medically induced coma and did not meet Millie until five days after her birth.

Millie spent the first 11 weeks of her life in neonatal intensive care and faced health challenges including chronic lung disease, which necessitated regular hospital appointments.

Despite this, she is excited to lead Kami Bear's Teddy Trail this year.

The walk starts at the Riverside Museum at 10am with participants choosing between a 5K or 10K route.

All children aged 16 and under can join for free.

William McGowan, head of partnerships and business development at Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity, said: "We are delighted to welcome our fantastic team of walkers to Buchanan Galleries this weekend to collect their trail packs, and to encourage other visitors to join us at Kami Bear's Teddy Trail.

"Make sure to join our own Kami Bear on his Teddy Trail across Glasgow this September and help raise money for the babies and young people treated at Glasgow children's hospital."

Kathy Murdoch, centre director at Buchanan Galleries, said: “Whether you’re an avid walker or just looking for a fun day out, we encourage everyone to join Kami Bear as he takes to the streets in September, in support of Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity and make a real difference to children’s lives.”

Funds raised from the trail will directly support The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow, providing life-changing projects, services, and medical equipment for children with serious illnesses and their families.
