Plans are underway to create a new energy storage facility in Lanarkshire and public feedback is wanted.

Boom Developments, a UK renewables developer, will hold a first-stage consultation event on September 4 from 3pm to 7pm at Burnhead Community Centre in Uddingston to introduce the project and collect feedback.

People can also give feedback online at boom-power.co.uk/aitkenhead/.

The proposed battery energy storage system (BESS) located south of the M8 at Bargeddie, north of Uddingston, will consist of battery units that store excess energy from renewable developments and release it into the grid during spikes in demand.

This technology reduces the risk of local power outages and lowers energy prices.

The project will also include other associated electrical infrastructure, as well as new landscaping and ecological improvements such as shrub and tree planting.

Mark Hogan, founder of Boom Developments, said: "We are excited to unveil our proposals for a battery storage facility at Aitkenhead Farm and enter the preliminary phase for the development.

"Boom Developments is dedicated to making a huge contribution to Scotland’s green energy transition, and projects such as the Aitkenhead BESS enable the storage and use of clean, renewable energy when required.

“We encourage any local residents interested in our proposals to attend the upcoming consultation event on the 4th of September, where information on the proposals will be on display and members of the team will be available to answer any questions.”

The developer has requested a screening opinion from the Scottish Government for the project, which will store over 50MW of renewable energy.

This process will determine whether an Environmental Impact Assessment is required.

At the consultation event, members of the project team will answer questions and gather feedback.

A second round of consultation will follow later in the year to provide an update before any application is submitted to the Scottish Government’s Energy Consents Unit.
