A Glasgow church is set to close and its congregation will merge with another one due to "insufficient" numbers.

Kelvinbridge Parish Church in the West End is scheduled to form a union with Wellington Parish Church, leaving the building empty.

The proposal, waiting for Presbytery approval, comes after the number of worshippers dropped, preventing the proper maintenance of the location.

Instead, a new ministry team will be established at Wellington Church, called Kelvin West.

Richard Baxter, minister at Wellington, said this was an "exciting opportunity" that would help them reach more people.

He added: “We already work across traditional church boundaries, hosting an Orthodox community and the chapel, Praying Hands Asian Fellowship, and others, so we’re more like a West End Christian Centre than a traditional Church of Scotland church.

"We look forward to working even more closely with our neighbours.”

Penny Stuart, session clerk at Kelvinbridge, said: “As the smaller of the two congregations, we look forward to being part of a larger, new church, to bringing our key groups, personnel and gifts to this fresh venture.

"Together, and in partnership with others, we believe we will be better resourced to engage in care and outreach to the communities around us in this part of Glasgow."

A Church of Scotland spokesperson confirmed the proposal is part of the Presbytery of Glasgow’s Mission Plan and was backed by both congregations.

They added: “Sadly, the number of regular worshippers at Kelvinbridge is insufficient to allow the congregation to maintain a building of its age, size and architectural significance.

"By sharing the building and resources with Wellington Parish Church, the Church can look forward to new ways of providing a strong and effective mission to this part of the city’s West End.”

Pending a final approval, there is no timeline yet for the closure.
