A childcare provider is set to take over a council-owned community centre in a 25-year deal.

Plans for a £750 per year lease for Bellcraig Community Centre on Gorstan Street to Summerston Childcare Ltd will go before councillors on Thursday.

They are being asked to approve the proposal under the People Make Glasgow Communities programme — a scheme which gives community groups and other organisations an opportunity to manage council venues.

Bellcraig Community Centre, a single-storey building opened in 1983, is currently leased to Glasgow Life, which runs culture and leisure venues for the council.

Summerston Childcare Ltd, a registered charity, works in partnership with the council to deliver early learning and childcare.

It has also worked with Glasgow Life to provide community activities such as family learning and support sessions.

The organisation has two services in the north west of Glasgow; the Summerston family learning centre at Bellcraig community centre, which opened in 2004, and Summerston after school care within St Blane’s Primary School.

Council officials have reported it now “wishes to secure a long-term lease of the centre and proposes to expand its business in order to provide community resources and support for all”.

Plans include installing extra toilets and improving the games hall. After school care could be moved into the building.

A council report added: “Summerston Childcare Ltd will effectively split the building into two halves, with one half providing care and education for children and families, and the other half containing a games hall and committee room which will be accessible to the community.  “It is proposed that the games hall and committee room will be available for hire by various services and organisations, as well as the community, for events, functions and meetings etc.”

It continued: “The granting of a long lease of the centre to Summerston will help to ensure that the community will benefit from increased childcare and early learning places.”

The tenants will have options to break the lease on the second, fourth, seventh, 10th, 15th and 20th anniversary of the date of entry.
