Industry experts have named a cosy Glasgow pub 'bar of the year'.

The Piper Whisky Bar on George Square in the city centre was presented with the accolade of Benromach Whisky Bar of the Year at this year's Pub and Bar Awards.

Returning for its 29th year, the event celebrates the best in Scottish hospitality with a glittering ceremony at DoubleTree by Hilton in Glasgow on August 27.

As the name suggests, the pub is known for serving a wide range of whiskies, with over 180 choices from every distillery in Scotland.

Food-wise, they serve traditional pub dishes as well as hot dogs, burgers and 'Scottish tapas', small plates of classic meals such as haggis, black pudding spring rolls and Scotch pies.

It was a big night for local spots, as Shilling Brewing Company was named Cold Town Craft Beer Pub of the Year, Boteco Do Brasil won Favela Latin American Venue of the Year and The Smokin’ Fox snatched the Sunday Mail Pub of the Year accolade.

We also previously reported that speakeasy The Absent Ear won the prize for Cocktail Bar of the Year.

Susan Young, who is the event organiser and editor of industry publication DRAM Scotland, said: “These awards are all about the people that make the hospitality industry the success it is.

"This year we had an exceptional entry.

"All the finalists deserve credit for the great venues that they run, but the trophies were presented to the pubs, restaurants and people that impressed their customers, judges and mystery shoppers most.

"Congratulations to each and every one!”
