A Glasgow swimming pool is set to reopen after being closed for almost two years.

Drumchapel Pool in the West End will open to the public on Monday, September 9, following a makeover and the removal of RAAC from a section of the facility's changing village.

We reported how the public swimming facility was initially closed on October 31, 2022, to undergo a £1.2million renovation.

Originally, work was estimated to take around eight months.

However, in October 2023, Glasgow Life confirmed that the presence of RAAC had been detected at the Drumry Road centre.

RAAC, or reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, is considered a potentially dangerous material as it is less durable than concrete and is prone to collapse when wet, as moisture soaks into its aerated holes.

Now, ahead of its opening next month, Glasgow Life says the refurbishment work included the replacement of air handling units, upgrading the building management system to improve air quality, enhancing the pool filtration system, new tiling and glazing where required, and refurbishment of the pool divider.

The organisation says the work will provide a more comfortable experience for pool users whilst improving energy efficiency.

Andrew Olney, Director of Libraries, Sport and Communities said: “The pool is important for many people in Drumchapel and surrounding areas.

"The discovery of RAAC and the opportunity to do further work extended the time Drumchapel Pool was closed but ensures the building and pool will continue to serve the local community for many years to come.”

Opening hours for the pool from Monday, September 9, are as follows:

  • Monday 10am to 4pm
  • Tuesday 10am to 4pm
  • Wednesday 3pm to 9pm
  • Thursday 3pm to 9pm
  • Friday 10am to 4pm
