A man was busted with cannabis worth over £900 in a Sainsbury's bag.

Police were on patrol at 10.40am on December 23, 2022, when they saw a car stopping on Milnpark Street in the Southside.

They walked up to it and noticed Alfer Uke in the driver's seat and another man in the passenger seat.

Cops noted a smell of cannabis, so they searched the vehicle.

A Sainsbury's bag was uncovered from underneath the driver's seat, containing 18 bags of cannabis.

They weighed 3.5g each with packaging that read "premium cannabis".

A ziplock bag was also found, containing more cannabis.

Altogether, the drugs found weighed 114.5g and were worth £960.

Uke, whose address is registered as a homeless hostel in Glasgow, was arrested and taken to Helen Street police station.

He appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court this week after he pleaded guilty to having the substance.

The court also heard that the 27-year-old was arrested again a week later on December 30, 2022.

Similarly, he was spotted by officers on Charlotte Street, Calton, getting in a car with a man.

When they came closer, cops smelled cannabis and a search revealed Uke has £1205 and two iPhones in his pocket.

A blue carrier bag was also located, which had 25 individual bags of cannabis in it, weighing 162g.

At the hearing, Uke appeared with an interpreter.

His lawyer said: "There is no dispute with the narrative for either case.

"You will see from the report how this man came to be in the country.

"He submitted an application for asylum and his case is still being processed. There is no ending point to that. He will be here for the foreseeable future and he has a reasonable level of English but is not suitable for this purpose.

"There is no language barrier as far as unpaid work is concerned.

"The financial and economic position he found himself in, directly resulted in him committing these offences.

"There has been no other matters coming to the attention of the court.

"He is aware that the combination of cases could result in custody. He is at low risk of reoffending."

Sheriff Collette Gallagher told him: "I can see that your involvement in selling cannabis was at the lesser and of the scale.

"You displayed an appropriate level of remorse. And most importantly, since this offence took place, you changed the way in which you look after yourself."

Uke was sentenced to 90 hours of unpaid work, to be completed within six months for one of the offences.

And a further 90 hours of unpaid work for the second one, also to be done within six months.
